And Serving Earth, Lest We Remain Unused

Mornings, the world was dying.

The old ones ached in their beds

and songbirds were craggy and thin.

The sky was colorless,

and nothing spoke. Then the sun moved

slightly. The birch tree

became lit, veins of red

thrumming through green leaves.

You sang there

on the warming branch,

while the small breezes quickened things.

Serve the earth, you said,

and I said, I will.

I take thee in sickness and in health.

I take thee into my heart

where everything opens,

and lasts forever.

I take thee, though I will die,

and nothing lasts.

I take thee into my loins,

and birth you again.

I take thee into my hands,

these hands of yours.

I reach into the soil

of you, and say Yes.

Though I am dying,

I say Yes.
